When some people think of security officers, they may think of someone patrolling, and if something is amiss, the first one on scene to alert authorities. And that’s true, security officers help deter (and respond to) crime, and are often the first onsite in the event of an emergency, alerting first responders and providing immediate assistance and care. This requires quality, confident security personnel that have been trained to safeguard people and property.

Indelible Quality of Security

But quality security is much more than this. Security personnel not only help protect people and property, they also provide peace of mind for employees, customers and other guests. They are the ones standing watch while also interacting regularly with employees and customers. The best security officers have the skills and personality traits to perform the service role as well – namely, compassion, patience and friendliness. After all, when you arrive at a busy location, the security officer is often the first person you see.

For example, when you enter a hospital, office building or stadium, it’s often chaotic and you have only a vague sense of where you need to be. Who do you seek out for guidance? Most often it’s a security officer. You just need help getting where you’re going, and you trust that someone in a security role can provide it. If they can help you with a smile, all the better.

How ‘Security with a Smile’ Saved the Day

This aspect of security is particularly relevant for me, thanks to a kind and compassionate security officer. When I was a child, my grandmother’s sodium had gone too low and she had passed out in the kitchen. My mom got the call and rushed over to pick me up, taking me to the hospital with her to be with my grandmother. By the time she parked the car she was completely frazzled. The hospital was massive; she had no idea where to go once she got inside, nor did she know in what condition she would find her mother. As we exited the car, my mom was pacing, ranting, and practically hyperventilating.

We didn’t get 10 steps before a security officer came over and asked if we needed help. My mom’s response was barely intelligible: “My mother is inside and I think she’s unconscious and I don’t know where to go and . . . ” The security officer was so calm and polite: “Ma’am, just follow me. I’ll take you right to her. It’s going to be okay.” And then he did just that, directing her to the right people who led us straight to my grandmother’s hospital room, where she was recovering nicely.

That security officer, thanks to his kind demeanor and superb customer service skills, took what was rapidly escalating into a tense situation, and dialed it down, making the situation much easier for everyone involved. To this day, when I think of that hospital in Tennessee, I don’t think of the facility or the doctors, nurses, I think of that security officer, who was the first official face I saw upon arriving on the premises, and who quarterbacked our stressful situation to perfection.

That’s why “Security with a Smile” is part of the SOS Security culture. While we provide extensive training for security skills, the essential customer service aspect is often the “it” factor we look for in candidates. It’s why we focus our hiring on finding the best to serve as brand ambassadors, representing SOS security and our clients.

SOS Security Officers as Brand Ambassadors

Security officers work hard to protect people and property, but also providing peace of mind for employees, customers and other guests. They also serve as brand ambassadors, interacting regularly with employees and customers, often as the first company touchpoint, to allow them site access, help them find their way, and provide other assistance as needed. As such, professional security requires a person that understands the safety and security aspect of the job but can also provide an elite level of customer service.
