HMR's KEVIN SCHATZLE, CHARLES HETZEL and JOHN
SALMON were instrumental in organizing the Communications Skills Course offered to SOS
Officers this past July. The course, presented by DR. COLELLA of SETON HALL
UNIVERSITY and INNOVATIVE DEVELOPMENT COMPANY OF FAR HILLS, was designed to analyze the
ways in which we communicate and react in everyday situations in the field. Officers
were offered the opportunity to sharpen their listening and communication skills through a
variety of activities such as role playing, open discussion, problem solving, and personal
empowerment.
Officers were encouraged to focus on their goals and direction in life not just on the
job, but in their personal lives through meditation and reflection. RAYMOND GIORDANO
commented that, "(the course) allowed us to interact with our superiors, co-workers,
and site employees more efficiently and clearly". JAMES CHINNICK said that the
course "gave him the tools needed to communicate with others in such a way as to
understand and be understood".
Opportunities like these are an excellent way for SOS Officers and our Clients alike to
build relationships that can foster a more productive environment. CHERYL SHOEMATE
notes that her stronger "values and self esteem" have led to "an advanced
productivity level at work".
