I am an SOS Security employee and I want to take a training course. What should I do?

The SOS Security Training Academy is currently located in the State of Virginia, although classes may be offered at other sites as contracts require. Contact your supervisor. If feasible for you, your supervisor will assist you in deciding which classes to take and how to schedule them around your work schedule. You can view available classes on the public calendar and on the employee calendar (posted on the Intranet Library) under Training.

What is an unarmed security officer?

In Virginia, the VA DCJS states that an unarmed security officer is a “person who performs the functions of observation, detection, reporting, or notification of appropriate authorities or designated agents regarding persons or property on the premises that individual is contracted to protect, and who does not carry or have access to a firearm in the performance of their duties.”

How do I become an unarmed security officer?

In Virginia to become an unarmed security officer, you must complete the 01E: Unarmed Security Officer Core Subjects training and submit the appropriate paperwork and fees to DCJS. For more information on DCJS requirements, click here.

What is an armed security officer?

According to the VA DCJS, an armed security officer is a “…person employed to safeguard and protect persons and property or deter theft, loss, or concealment of any tangible or intangible personal property on the premises he is contracted to protect, and who carries or has access to a firearm in the performance of his duties.”

How do I become an armed security officer?

In Virginia, to become an armed security officer you must complete the following courses: 01E: Unarmed Security Officer Core Subjects, 05E: Armed Security Officer Arrest Authority, and 75E: Armed Security Officer Entry-Level Firearms/Handgun. Is your training academy certified?

Yes, the SOS Security Training Academy is certified by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), as are our instructors. Our DCJS identification number is: VA DCJS 88-10047.

What is DCJS? How do I submit my paperwork?

DCJS is the acronym used to refer to the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, the regulatory agency for the criminal justice system in the state of Virginia. DCJS is responsible for setting private security regulations and training requirements, as well as maintaining private security registration, certification, and licensing records.

To submit registration or renewal paperwork to DCJS, you may either mail the required materials or deliver them in person. The mailing address of the DCJS office is as follows:

How do I start my career once I have registered with DCJS?

What do I need to bring to class?

Please bring a pen and paper to class for taking notes. Remember that many courses last several hours, so we recommend you dress in comfortable, casual attire. A snack or beverage is also recommended for longer courses.

Do I need to complete my training and DCJS registration before I can begin work?

According to DCJS, unarmed security officers may work for 90 consecutive days while completing the compulsory minimum training requirements, provided their fingerprints were submitted on or before their date of hire. This may vary depending on your specific position or employer, so be sure to discuss this with your employer if you are unsure.

Armed security officers must complete their training and registration before beginning work.

How often do I need to renew my DCJS registration?

Unarmed security officers must renew their registration every 24 months by completing 01I: Security Officer Core Subjects In-Service training and submitting renewal paperwork and fees to DCJS.

Armed security officers must renew their registration every 24 months by completing 01I: Security Officer Core Subjects In-Service training and submitting renewal paperwork to DCJS. In addition, armed security officers must renew their firearms endorsement every 12 months by completing 07R: Armed Security Officer Firearms Re-qualification training and submitting renewal paperwork and fees to DCJS.
